Bitch Please - Honey Cocaine

Honey Cocaine’s debut mixtape is called “Fuck Yo Feelings Vol. 1”, and the first hook of the mixtape states blankly “Fuck yo feeling though”. That is the range of emotions on display from this young rapper, who rarely goes anywhere with subject matter beyond smoking weed, dismissing lesser dudes and elegantly saying “fuck you”. 

Super exciting right? Yeah, it actual is though.

The production on the tape is pretty minimal and should make anyone who liked the first third of Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded excited. Snaps, claps, and isolated buzzing synths are the primary sounds, and while similar to “Rack City” by Tyga, who discovered her, it also isn’t far from Atlanta’s mid-2000s Snap music, the Pack’s “Vans”, or even stuff by DJ Sliink and other Club producers.

The slightly still unsung trend of rap music this year is that while, “Trap” has spun off into its own weird internet genre (Diplo co-signs!), rap production in the mainstream (Drake’s “The Motto” and Loverance’s “Up”) and underground level (E-40’s “Function” and King L’s “Val Venus”) has been stripping down its tracks instead of continuing to pile on darker and more menacing synths. 

The dark sounds of Young Chop might work for the harsh violence in the songs of Chief Keef and Lil Reese, but on the other-side of the sonic coin Honey Cocaine’s unrestrained shit-talking works better with sparser instrumentals. Her mixtape is a little over 40 minutes of these types of tracks, and besides a few middling Tyga verses, the whole thing is probably one of the more entertaining rap releases that probably won’t receive much critical phrase (a Tyga co-sign won’t get you a Spin Cover).
