Daze 1.0 - Cozzy

Have you ever read the “Hipster Hop” Wikipedia page? I’ll guess no and say you’re better off for not looking at it. A small list of “Rappers” included on the page: Mac Miller, Odd Future, Das Racist, Kid Cudi, Lil B, The Knux (?!), and even Yelawolf.

Not that “Hipster Hop” (or “Hipster Rap” if you will) ever really had a solid definition, but I’d wager that Das Racist and Mac Miller couldn’t be further apart in terms of subject matter, and the closest thing any of these rappers would agree on at one point would be smoking weed.

“Hipster” in the last decade has been pummeled to a point of meaninglessness, and through some weird post-ironic effect white people have twisted it to an insult—creating their own self-loathing 6-letter word, as if white people had their own bleep-able racial slur.

I guess, I should say sorry to Cozzy because as I watch his video my first thought was “I really want that shirt he’s wearing” and this some “Hipster Rap”. It features a healthy dose of nostalgia (see: the song’s chill hook and the overly referential opening of the video), but it also features prominent sunshine, which is pretty awesome and rare for the black-and-white or overtly gritty aesthetics of rap videos in 2012.

I will admit that besides Beautiful Lou, this is the first artist to follow me on Tumblr, who I actually enjoyed the work enough to post in on my blog (and didn’t try to sound like Drake/The Weeknd). Hats off to Cozzy for that, and with that I guess I should listen to his full album at some point.
