Watch This- Future (feat. Rocko)
“Racks” has continued to increase in popularity, and seems to have given a spark to radio stations to continue to plays songs by Future, Rocko, and YC (if he ever were to release more songs, and change his name to something slightly memorable).
As auto-tuned “big money” anthems find their niche on rap stations around the country, “Watch This” continues this trend. The chorus by Future ceases having recognizable human voices and effectively turns them into robot singing. While, auto-tune may not be anything new, the way it has filtered down into songs like this one is interesting. The use of auto-tune is no longer to “improve” a person’s singing or have them reach notes a person could not normally reach.
The effect is now used to turn the song into one giant hook, so even the “rapping” reminds your mind the hook of the song. The other trademark of these Auto-Hop* songs is the production, which seems to intentionally use the cheapest synths and drum kits the producer could find for the track. Mercy’s production is functional on “Watch This”, but nearly everything about it has been done before better in other songs. But coming together these lesser elements are able to create another song that follows in the path forged in the last couple years by other Auto-Hop tunes.
*Yes. I am pulling for the creation of the phrase “Auto-Hop” to describe these songs (“Racks”, “Maybe”, and all of those terrible auto-tuned songs Young Dro was making a couple years ago).
